Umpiring |
|
If no one broke the rules we would not need umpires! However, contest will always provide the need for someone to judge that the play is fair and that everyone has the same rights and protections under the rules of the game.
It is the responsibility of each club at PNA to provide an umpire for each game that their club plays.
Many clubs make it compulsory for each player to learn to be an umpire and to subsequently umpire games. This can lead to a very poor standard of umpiring, meaning unhappy umpires, unhappy players and unhappy teams.
At Saints we are taking a facilitative and co-operative approach to cater to our umpiring needs. By not making it compulsory, but reward based we are endeavouring to encourage eager umpires to improve their skills and for the players to get the best umpiring available. All new umpires will be provided with training, mentoring and inclusion in umpiring clinics based at PNA.
It is an important function of the club to make sure that our umpires are properly trained and qualified for the game to which they are assigned. However, please remember that it is every player's responsibility to consider umpiring as a skill they can undertake. We encourage all interested players and parents to umpire.
Whilst acknowledging the large commitment needed to be an umpire, it is also imperative that we have enough umpires to cover all our games. So, it is necessary to ensure that each team entered into the competition provides at least one umpire back into the club.
All Saints umpires are paid according to the grade being umpired, the umpire's experience and what umpiring exams have been completed. We encourage umpires to umpire every week and to umpire more than one game.
